Lithuania and Germany to continue military co-operation


On 17-18 February the Parliamentary State Secretary of German Federal Ministry of Defence Walter Kolbow will be visiting Lithuania. Lithuanian State Secretary of National Defence Ministry Valdemaras Sarapinas and W. Kolbow will sign long-tem co-operation guidelines after Lithuania joins NATO this spring.

The agreement will define a long-term military and political co-operation between Lithuania and Germany. The document provides for conduct of joint exercises, visits and consultations of German military experts teams, assistance in training Lithuanian military officers.


Mr W. Kolbow will also hold meetings with Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, Major General Jonas Kronkaitis, Undersecretary of Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Evaldas Ignatavičius, Chairman of Parliamentary Committee on National Security and Defence, Alvydas Sadeckas, and other members of the committee.


Co-operation between the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence and the German Ministry of Defence in the field of defence has developed in accordance with a bilateral agreement signed on 1 September 1994 and a bilateral agreement on conditions of mutual official and working visits signed on that same day. Furthermore, the countries signed in Bone in 1994 an agreement concerning reciprocal assistance in the event of major disasters and emergency. The agreement came into force in 1996.
