Tens of thousands celebrated the centenary of Lithuania’s military aviation at an event in Šiauliai

On July 27 The Lithuanian Air Force Base in Šiauliai hosted Air Show Falcon Wings 2019 marking the 100th anniversary of the Lithuanian military air capability. The event was attended by the leadership of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces — the audience were greeted by acting Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis and recently inaugurated Chief of Defence Major General National Defence Valdemaras Rupšys.  The air show with programs from various aircraft, static displays activities and competitions from aviation organisations and universities has attracted tens of thousands of viewers this year.

On July 27 one of the most important events of the Sea Festival took place on the Baltic Sea — flower wreaths were lowered onto the water with attendance of the President of the Republic of Lithuania, leadership of the Ministry of National Defence, representatives of the Lithuanian Air Force and the Lithuanian Navy. Two Lithuanian Navy vessels were in the ship parade: Aukštaitis (P14) patrol ship as the flagship and Šakiai search and rescue ship.

On July 26 new Defence Attaché of Sweden to Lithuania Lieutenant Colonel Lars Eklind was accredited  and outgoing Defence Attaché Lieutenant Colonel Örjan Ström farewelled at a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence.

On August 1 rotations and leadership of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence (eFP) Battalion Battle Group Lithuania will change over at a ceremony at the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla.

Representative of the German Army Lieutenant Colonel Peer Papenbroock will hand over the command to another German representative Lieutenant Colonel Rouven Habel after having been in charge of the NATO eFP Battalion Battle Group Lithuania since February. Lt Col Rouven Habel is the commander of the 391st Mechanised Infantry Battalion of the Bundeswehr.

“The most exhilarating thing about today is probably that Lt Gen Vytautas Žukas is handing over to Maj Gen Valdemaras Rupšys the responsibilities when the Armed Forces are of a markedly different quality in comparison to that five years ago. The challenges waiting for the new Chief of Defence are not smaller because further capability development is ahead. Important projects are only going fluently on paper, Maj Gen V. Rupšys will have an extremely responsible task to ensure continuity and completion of the ongoing processes,” acting Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said congratulating the new Chief of Defence.

On July 24 Brigadier General Raimundas Vaikšnoras took over the responsibilities of the Commander of the Land Force from the confirmed next Chief of Defence of Lithuania Major General  Valdemaras Rupšys at a ceremony in Vilnius.

On July 25 outgoing Chief of Defence Lt Gen Jonas Vytautas Žukas will hand over the command to the new Chief of Defence of Lithuania Maj Gen Valdemaras Rupšys in the Cathedral Square in front of parading troops. The regalia of command will be presented to the incoming Chief of Defence by the Commander-in-Chief of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda.

On July 23 acting Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas discussed regional security issues, effectiveness of the present deterrence measures, and military mobility at a meeting with U.S. Army Europe Deputy Commanding General for Army National Guard Major General Joseph Jarrard conducting a visit to Lithuania. Acting Vice Minister V. Umbrasas underscored the security challenges Lithuania and the entire region were facing and the importance of the presence of U.S. forces for ensuring security.

Arms control inspectors of Ukraine to conduct an observation flight over the territory of Lithuania

On July 22–26 arms control inspectors of Ukraine are visiting Lithuania. The experts are conducting a reconnaissance overflight over the territory of Lithuania in an AN-30B aircraft with specialised digital cameras of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on the basis of the Open Skies Treaty. Representatives of the Lithuanian Armed forces will be on board together with the Ukrainian inspectors during the flight to ensure the agreed flight plan is followed and the observation equipment certified according to the Open Skies Treaty requirements are used.

On July 15 – 21 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled four times to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.
