New Defence Attaché of Georgia accredited to Lithuania

On March 1 new Defence Attaché of Georgia Col Zviad Shanava was accredited to Lithuania at a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence.

The Ministry of National Defence submitted procurement applications to the Government of the United States of America concerning acquisition and maintenance of 200 Joint Light Tactical Vehicles (JLTV) for the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Vice Minister of National Defence Giedrimas Jeglinskas put that across in Washington at a meeting with Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Ellen Lord at the U.S Department of Defence on February 22.

On February 18 – 24 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled three times to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

“The Baltic Defence College is one of the best recognised international military training institutions in the region. Its alumni are security and defence leaders of today who shape and implement directions of security policy to our countries and the entire NATO Alliance,” Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas said at the commemorative events marking the 20th anniversary of the College based in Tartu, Estonia, on February 22.

Defence cooperation of Lithuania and Poland is stepped up

Ministers of National Defence of Lithuania and Poland met in Warsaw on February 21 to step up Lithuanian-Polish defence cooperation. Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis and Minister of National Defence of Poland Mariusz Błaszczak discussed security and defence while emphasising the importance of bilateral military cooperation.

Ministers also signed two bilateral agreements on affiliation of Lithuanian and Polish Armed Forces’ brigades to the Multinational Division North-East HQ, and on the creation of a secure communication channel for radar surveillance data exchange.

On February 20 the Government approved the proposal of the Ministry of National Defence to establish the post of Defence Attaché at the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania in Moldova which will function as a NATO Contact Point Embassy in 2019-2020. At the moment there is no Lithuanian Defence Attaché based in Moldova, our country’s military interest is represented by a Defence Attaché based in Kyiv.

U.S.-manufactured Javelin anti-tank missile system stocks of the Lithuanian Armed Forces supplemented

Additional missiles for the Javelin anti-tank defence systems procured by the Defence Materiel Agency under the Ministry of National Defence have been delivered to Lithuania. The worth of the procurement is over USD 20 million, USD 5 million of which is financial support of the United States of America. The additional systems will be provided to units of the Lithuanian Land Force in order to strengthen defence capabilities of Lithuania.

Cyber Security Council discussed EU and Lithuanian cyber security initiatives

On February 19 the Cyber Security Council met at the Ministry of National Defence with high representatives of the European Commission in attendance.  The first meeting this year addressed European Union and Lithuanian cyber security initiatives and issues and cyber challenges Lithuanian websites faced.
