Rotation of Lithuanian units in NATO Response Force

January 1, EOD platoon based on Juozas Vitkus Engineer Battalion finished standby period in the NATO Response Force (NRF).

 

Its duty was taken over by an around 100-strong guard company based on Lithuanian Grand Duke Algirdas Motorised Infantry Battalion.

 

Around 30 EOD specialists of the Engineer Battalion had been conducting duty in the 15th rotation of NATO Response Force from July 2010.

Social integration project for women initiated in Ghor province of Afghanistan

An education project was launched in Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor province, to raise awareness of Afghan women of finance management principles. The project was put forward by a local NGO working with Afghan women affairs. The project received funding from the US Agency for International Development (USAID), civilian element of the Lithuanian-led PRT and PRT’s CIMIC division assisted in its development and coordination.

 

On December 14 the first phase of the project, instructor training, began. Ten women were trained for eight days to become finance management instructors in amassing and retaining savings, managing loans and credits. When the instructors finish the eight-day training they will convey the knowledge to other participants of the project. It is expected that the project will induce women to undertake their own business and earn money independently.

Water Purification Unit of Vytenis Battalion will be deployed on a half-year duty with the EU Battle Group

On January 1 Water Purification Unit (WPU) of the Lithuanian Grand Duke Vytenis General Support Logistic Battalion will be assigned for a half-year duty with the EU Battle Group. From January 1 to July 1 of 2011 12 service members of Lithuania will conduct duty in a joint Battle Group together with Austrian, Dutch, Finnish and German troops.

 

Unit of the Lithuanian Armed Forces on standby in the EU Battle Group will be deployed in Lithuania and maintain high readiness to join a multinational operation of the European Union any moment if a decision was made to employ combat groups in a crisis region.

Lithuanian Defence Attachés accredited to foreign countries with national defence leadership discussed current matters of defence policy

December 20–23, Lithuanian Defence Attachés accredited to foreign countries gather in Vilnius for a series of meetings with leadership of the Ministry of National Defence, representatives of ministerial divisions and units of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

In the meetings Defence Attachés discussed critical points of defence policy, action plans of the national defence system, objectives of international cooperation and other points essential for representing Lithuania abroad.

December 20, exposition of works of art of Lithuanian children was opened at the Information and Culture Centre of Chaghcharan, provincial capital of Ghor. It was presented for community of Chaghcharan by Lithuanian peacekeepers serving in Ghor with the Lithuanian-led PRT.

 

The exposition was opened by Commander PRT Col Remigijus Baltrėnas, PRT troops, new province of Ghor Aqahi Abdullah Heiwad, representatives of provincial administration, governmental and non-governmental organisations, including those of youth, operating in the province, representatives of local media, and other members of local community.

Lithuania withdrew personnel form the EU operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina

On December 20 service of an officer of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in the EU Operation Althea in Bosnia and Herzegovina came to an end together finishing Lithuania's participation in the operation.

 

Lithuania has been participating in the Operation Althea since 2004 when it was started. For the period till present Lithuania used to maintain an officer for a half-year duty to Althea headquarters in Sarajevo. Twelve Lithuanian officers were to the operation within six years.

December 13-16, the strat-up planning conference of exercise „Amber Hope 2011" was held at Gen Adolfas Ramanauskas Warfare Training Centre. Scenario and plan of the exercise were elaborated on, work of divisions of the exercise planning, of experts across various fields and foreign partners were coordinated at the conference.

 

Representatives of participant foreign countries - Estonia, Georgia, USA, Canada, Latvia, Poland and Finland, and Public Security Service under the Ministry of the Interior and the Lithuanian Redo Cross took attended the conference alongside representatives of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

Milestone of the Baltic cooperation - closer defence cooperation will be pursued

December 16-17, Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Rasa Juknevičienė discussed Baltic defence cooperation and key points of NATO and regional cooperation with the Nordic countries with Defence Minister of Latvia Artis Pabriks and Defence Minister of Estonia Jaak Aaviksoo in Tartu (Estonia).

 

Minister of National Defence R. Juknevičienė noted that Baltic defence cooperation to date should step into a new stage - integration of the Baltic States, i.e., countries should seek an even closer agreement of joint defence cooperation action to ensure visibility of joint activities and benefit of other our joint projects. Minister said that it would advisable for each of the Baltic States to specialise in some given areas where it has more experience than the other Baltic States. For example, Lithuania could help pooling efforts of all the Baltic States of joint action in developing mutual air force, special forces and energy security projects.

People of Lithuania knitted, Lithuanian peacekeepers handed over warm socks to children in Ghor

December 16, troops of the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT delivered warm socks to children of provincial children’s house and kindergarten that were handmade by people of Lithuania via a charity campaign „Warm hearts - warm feet“.

 

Accompanied by Director of Social Affairs Department of Ghor troops first visited kindergarten of Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor province. They spent some time talking to children and nurses and handed over to them 200 pairs of socks. Later peacekeepers visited Chaghcharan children’s home to where they delivered around 400 pairs of socks from Lithuania. They also told children about the charity campaign organised in Lithuania and shared their impressions about peacekeepers’ service in a faraway country.

On December 13-17 the 13th rotation of Lithuanian peacekeepers will take part in tactical field training to undergo evaluation of progress of readiness of PRT-13 staff and other units for deployment to the multinational ISAF mission in Afghanistan.

 

Exercise „New Rotation" will take place in the territory of Pajuostys Airport (Panevėžio Distr.) in a field camp installed for the exercise period. Military personnel of PRT-13 will carry out a spectrum of peacekeeping tasks, plan operations, arrange patrols and escorts, provide guard of the camp, conduct fictitious meetings with „local Afghans". Around 200 troops will be involved n the training event.
