Minister of National Defence met with Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania National Guard Maj Gen J. L. Wright

imgSeptember 2, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė met with Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania National Guard Maj Gen J. L. Wright currently on visit in Lithuania.

 

In the meeting the Minister thanked for the attention the Pennsylvania National Guard committed to Lithuania and the Lithuanian Armed Forces. Long-term cooperation with the Pennsylvania National Guard is the most active link of strategic partnership of Lithuania and USA which is maintained via a variety of support programs, exercises, and other projects helping Lithuania to develop national defence capabilities necessary for participation in international operations, to buy military equipment and to train personnel. „It an important cooperation to us that we value greatly," Minister of National Defence R. Juknevičienė said.

Head of the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan Jukka Savolainen visited Lithuanian-led PRT

imgOn August 29, Head of the European Union Police Mission in Afghanistan (EUPOL AFGHANISTAN) Jukka Savolainen paid an official visit to the Lithuanian-led PRT camp. He was accompanied by Frederic Colas, Head of EUPOL Regional Development, and other guests.

 

Head of EUPOL AFGHANISTAN met with PRT-11 Chief of Staff Lt Col Nerijus Kačkauskas, Head of civilian element of PRT Linas Linkevičius, civilian representatives of the United States, representatives of EUPOL team.

Lithuanian Special Operations troops in Afghanistan airlifted civilians injured by hostile fire

imgOn September 1 troops of the Lithuanian Special Operations Squadron performing duty in southern Afghanistan conducted a joint operation with Afghan National police officers. During the operation, hostile fighters opened fire at the SOF Squadron near a local village. After a fire response they retreated.

 

After the exchange soldiers and policemen found two civilians injured by the hostile fire and rendered immediate medical assistance. Medical airlift helicopter carried the injured to the nearest hospital. At the moment their lives are not in danger.

 

No Lithuanian soldiers or ANP officers were injured in the exchange of fire. They returned safely to the camp after the operation.

International mine countermeasures operation „Open Spirit 2010

August 27-September 8, „Open Spirit 2010" international mine clearance exercise is being conducted in the exclusive economic zone and territorial waters of Lithuania in the Baltic Sea. It is the most extensive naval mine clearance exercise since 2008.

 

16 warships and three diving teams from ten countries will be involved in the exercise organised by the Lithuanian Naval Force: Belgium, Estonia, Latvia, Poland, Lithuania, Norway, France, Russia, Finland and Germany. Lithuania will be represented by three ships - mine sweeper M52 „Sūduvis" and patrol ships P11 „Žemaitis" and P14 „Aukštaitis".

Air Contingents conducting NATO Baltic Air-policing mission rotated

On September 1 Air Contingents deployed on the Baltic Air-policing mission rotated in a ceremony is Šiauliai Airbase of the Lithuanian Air Force. The outgoing shift of Polish troops was replaced on the mission by a US Air Contingent with four F-15 C Eagle. F-15 and MiG-29 scrambled for a demonstration flight during the ceremony.

 

USA will be in charge of the Baltic Air-policing mission for a third time. The country provided F-16 Fighting Falcon to guard Baltic airspace on October-December of 2005, and F-15 C Eagle on October 2008.
