Russian arms control experts conduct visit in the Training Regiment

imgJuly 27-29, a group of three Russian arms control experts will conduct evaluation visit under the Vienna Document 1999 in the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment of the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

According to the Vienna Document, each member state of OSCE has the right to verify if any other OSCE member is not involved in military activities requiring advance notification, and do not maintain undeclared military capabilities.

Lithuanian Servicemen Break the Record

July 16-25, Lithuanian servicemen took part in the 35th CISM World Military Parachuting Championship in Bouchse, Switzerland. The Lithuanians took  fourth place in the free fall event  and broke Lithuania's record: they performed 30 formations in 35 seconds. Only Belgians, Germans and the Swiss were better than Lithuanians.

International naval exercise „Baltic Bikini 10

imgInternational naval exercise „Baltic Bikini 10" was opened in Klaipėda, July 26. More than 70 airborne personnel of the Lithuanian, Latvian and Estonian Air Forces take part in the training event.

 

During the exercise aircrews will train to abandon an aircraft after ditching, and drill their skills of using rescue equipment.

 

During the active phase aircrews will rely on their own strength and rescue equipment at hand to dive out of the cockpit of an imitation aircraft submerged 2 metres under water. The cockpit will be lowered from a ship following the pattern of ditching. After that participants will use rescue equipment to stay on water surface for around an hour waiting for the rescue helicopter.

Lithuanian soldiers and Israel's delegation will tribute the memory of Freedom Defenders and Holocaust Victims

imgJuly 28, Lithuanian Grand Duke Gediminas Headquarters Battalion's Honour Guard Company will take part in a tribute ceremony for Freedom Defenders and Holocaust Victims together with members of the Israeli Government's program Witnesses in Uniform. In the ceremony in Antakalnis Cemetery Acting Chief of Defence of Lithuania Brig Gen Edvardas Mažeikis will take part.

July 27-28, members of the Witnesses in Uniform program will tour spots of genocide and cultural objects in Vilnius, Kaunas and Žiežmariai, meet with leaders of Lithuanian Jewish Community and Lithuanian institutions, and lay flowers in Antakalnis Cemetery and in Paneriai Memorial together with the Honour Guard Company.

EU Special Representative V. Ušackas with delegation paid a visit to Chaghcharan

imgJuly 22, the EU Special Representative and the Head of the EU Delegation to Afghanistan Vygaudas Ušackas paid an official visit to Ghor, province of Afghanistan protected by the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT. In his delegation Ambassador of France in Afghanistan Jean de Ponton d‘Amecourt, Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan Valteris Baliukonis, Assistant Head of the Mission of Japan Fumio Shimizu, Assistant Head of the EU Police Mission to Afghanistan (EUPOL) Uwe Mainz, and other representatives of the EU Representation and EUPOL officers arrived to Chaghcharan, capital of Ghor.

NATO holds the 6th Baltic Regional Training Event in the Baltic States

imgOn July 20-22 Adaži Military Area (Latvia) will host the Baltic Region Training Event VI (BRTE VI) NATO Allied Air Component Command Ramstein (Germany) organises for forward air controllers of air forces of Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

 

NATO has been holding BRTE in the Baltic States since 2008. Five training events held so far were tailored to drill capabilities of the Baltic States taking part in the Baltic Air-policing mission. BRTEs are organised to enhance interoperability of the Baltic military capabilities, to highlight NATO's commitments to the Baltic Region, and to demonstrate visibility of the Alliance in the region.

Junior Staff Officers Course is Completed

Junior Staff Officer Course, which started in the General Jonas Žemaitis Military Academy of Lithuania on 19 April 2010, finished on 22 July 2010. 37 Lithuanian and 10 foreign officers from Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kosovo, Moldova and Ukraine completed the course.

Over 80 kg destroyed in Ghor, Afghanistan

imgJuly 20, EUPOL team deployed with the Lithuanian-led Chaghcharan PRT and police officers of Ghor burned over 80 kg of raw narcotic material.

 

The seized narcotics were burned during an operation observed by the Governor of Ghor Sayed Mohammad Iqbal Munib, representatives of EUPOL team, Chief of Police of Ghor Gen. Abdul Baghy Noristany and other leaders of Ghor provincial law enforcement and security institutions.

Visit of representative of the United States Special Operations Command, Europe

imgJuly 16, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė met with representative of the United States Special Operations Command responsible for strategic planning and international military cooperation Lt Col Joseph King.

 

In the meeting at the Ministry of National Defence US-Lithuanian defence cooperation was addressed as well as points of the multinational operation in Afghanistan. US representatives highlighted that military and political leadership of the United States highly appreciate Lithuania's contribution in Afghanistan.

Military Police of the Lithuanian Armed Forces took over protection of the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in Afghanistan

imgFrom July 16 the Head of the Lithuanian Special Mission in the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan will be guarded by Military Police of the Lithuanian Armed Forces who took over the function from the Lithuanian Special Forces.

 

MP will conduct the duty on a rotational basis of several months. They will take over the same responsibilities as were performed by the Special Operations Forces previously.
