Troops of Logistics Command underwent training in Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany

imgApril 20-30, members of the Movement Control Centre of the Lithuanian Armed Forces participated in the „MILU MUSTER" exercise of the Movement Control Multinational Integrated Logistic Unit (MILU) hosted by Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany.

The purpose of the exercise was to evaluate operational capabilities of the multinational logistic unit and to activate it for assignments.

Air Contingents on the NATO Baltic Air-policing mission will rotate

imgApril 30, military contingents conducting the QRA Baltic Air-policing mission will change during a ceremony at the LAF Šiauliai Air Base: Polish Air Contingent with four MiG-29 will replace French soldiers.

 

Polish forces are deploying air assets for the Baltic Air-policing mission for the third time (after service on January-March 2006 and March-June 2008 with MiG-29 fighter-jets). The majority of the present shift come from the 23rd Air Base and the 1st Tactical Squadron of the Polish Air Force based in Minsk Mazowiecki near Warsaw. The third Polish rotation named „Eagle 3" will comprise 100 troops, 8 of them pilots. The shift is led by Lt. Col. Robert Kozak, Commander of the 1st Tactical Squadron. Members of the shift from Minsk Mazowiecki will come to the Baltic States for the second time; they guarded the Baltic skies for the first time in 2006.

PRT-12 trained techniques of suppressing riot

imgApril 27-30, troops of the 12th rotation of the Provincial Reconstruction Team underwent training of suppressing riot in Rukla. Individual and collective training was conducted according the rules of warfare actions.

 

„The goal of the training was to teach the personnel to employ special means of countering unrest to the end of protecting PRT personnel and controlling local rioters without causing danger to their lives as their security and improvement of their living conditions is our key objective in this mission", - said Commander PRT Operations and Planning Division Maj. Rolandas Putnikas.

On April 28 in the framework of the work visit in the United States Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė met with Paul Jones, Deputy of the US Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan Richard Holbrook. In the meeting representatives of both countries touched upon the current affairs of the NATO's ISAF mission in Afghanistan. Lithuanian Minister briefed P. Jones about the continued Lithuania's engagement in Afghanistan and the proceeding of joint Lithuanian-US projects. Consultations have already begun between the Lithuanian Armed Forces and representatives of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard on the Police Operational Mentor and Liaison Team which would be deployed with the PRT of Ghowr to provide training for local policemen, a joint project of Lithuania and the United States that was discussed with the Adjutant General of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard Maj. Gen. Jessica L. Wright during her visit in Lithuania. Minister R.Juknevičienė also mentioned the current search for new routes of logistic provision and encouraged the US Armed Forces to use the opportunity of transit via Lithuania.

imgIn the April 28th meeting with James Logan Jones, National Security Adviser to the US President Barrack H. Obama, Lithuanian Defence Minister R. Juknevičienė discussed fundamental points of Lithuanian-US strategic partnership in international security.

 

National Security Adviser to the US President J. L. Jones upheld that the US Administration's strategic interest in Europe entailed more dialogue and consultations on strategic matters between USA and Europe than ever before. The same applied to the Central and Eastern Europe receiving particular attention from the US. He confirmed the United States' attempt to maintain an effective NATO's nuclear deterrent as long as there were nuclear weapon nations. It is crucial for Lithuania that all the countries within NATO would be equally protected even in the context of ongoing discussions about circumstances of invoking the nuclear weapon.

On April 26–27 Defence Attachés accredited to Lithuania visited Vilnius and Šiauliai.

On the first day of visit foreign guests met with the Chief Adviser to the President Jonas Markevičius and other officials of the President’s Office at the Presidential Palace of the Republic of Lithuania. Later the visiting Attachés proceeded to the Defence Staff of the Ministry of National Defence and met with the Chief of Defence of Lithuania Maj. Gen. Arvydas Pocius and listened to a representation of the Military Doctrine of Lithuania.

Polish fighter-jets come to replace the French on the Baltic Air-policing mission

imgApril 28 is the set date of a four Polish Mig-29 fighter-jets' landing at Šiauliai Air Base. Incoming fighters will take over the NATO's Baltic Air-policing mission from the French „Mirage 2000". Dates of landing may be moved to 29 or 30 with respect to weather conditions.

On April 25-26, Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas attended the meeting of the EU Council of Foreign Affairs also encompassing joint sessions with Defence Ministers, Luxemburg.

In a separate session the Ministers addressed the points of establishing the European External Action Service (EEAS) and accentuated the importance of Defence Ministers' involvement in the discussion. The Ministers also exchanged views on the possibilities of increasing defence ministers' mandate in the Common Security and Defence Policy in the context of the Treaty of Lisbon.

On April 27 work visit of the Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will begin with an intense marathon of meetings with top-ranking security and defence officials in USA.

 

„I expect that we will continue working on the points important to Lithuania in the meetings with security and defence officials of authority of the US President's Cabinet and the Government. Many changes are observed in the international security policy that could also influence security situation in our country and the Central Europe. As it is known, Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) between Russia and USA was signed, there are ongoing discussions on limiting employment of nuclear weapon, positions of missile defence in Europe, and NATO's Strategic Concept. As a NATO member Lithuania is very much interested in obtaining latest news from its strategic partner - the United States," said Minister of National Defence R. Juknevičienė before departing. According to the Minister, the present visit (a second since the beginning of last year) is very important „in synchronising clocks with our strategic partners to measure the rhythm of change in the international security environment".

April 27-30, Minister of National Defence Rasa Juknevičienė will pay a work visit to the USA. It will be a second Lithuanian National Defence Minister's visit since the beginning of last year. Among other visit programme items, Mrs.  R. Juknevičienė is schedulled to meet with the US Secretary of Defence Robert Gates.
