R. Karoblis to attend EU Defence Ministers’ meeting in Brussel


On March 6 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis is taking part in the European Union Defence Ministers’ meeting in Brussels. The meeting will focus on defence projects in the Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) framework and assessing progress. The ministers will also discuss EU-NATO cooperation in a separate session with NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg.


It is the first EU Defence Ministerial since approving the Permanent Structured Cooperation in December 2017 , PESCO activities will be carried out through projects initiated my member states. The 17 approved PESCO projects include Lithuania’s proposal: cyber rapid response force and mutual assistance in cyber security initiative. Lithuania is the lead nation of the project, 6 EU members, Spain, Croatia, the Netherlands, France, Romania and Finland, are participants, and 5 more countries, Belgium, Estonia, Greece, Slovenia, and Germany, are observers.


Lithuania is also member of the Dutch-initiated and led military mobility initiative aimed at swiftly and effectively removing procedural, legal and infrastructural obstacles for movement of forces in Europe.


The Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) is an instrument allowed for in the Treaty of Lisbon, for deepening the cooperation in security and defence area for those EU member states that have military capabilities meeting higher criteria and are bound by greater commitments.
