Second Lithuanian rotation formally deployed to the United Nations-led Operation MINUSMA in Mali

On January 26 a deployment ceremony was held in Panevėžys for the second rotation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Force Protection Unit sent to serve in the UN-led stability operation MINUSMA in Mali.

On January 26 a deployment ceremony will be held in Panevėžys for the second rotation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Force Protection Unit sent to serve in the UN-led stability operation MINUSMA in Mali.

The second Force Protection Unit rotation includes 34 professional military service soldiers and soldiers with the 5th Territorial Unit, Vytis Military District, National Defence Volunteer Force. They will replace their colleagues from the 6th Territorial Unit, Resurrection Military District, National Defence Volunteer Force, and serve as part of the German Contingent in the area of operation. Lithuanian soldiers’ task in the operation is to ensure force security within the military base compound in Gao province, eastern part of Mali.

This year the Lithuanian Armed Forces begin changing military uniform to the universal camouflage pattern. Military personnel is expected to be provided with uniforms of the new standard from the second quarter of 2018.

On January 22 Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas met with a delegation of the Bundeswehr Joint Military Medical Service led by Surgeon General Lieutenant General Dr. Michael Tempel to discuss bilateral cooperation in the area of military medicine, Lithuania’s participation in the German-initiated Framework Nation Concept (FNC) to develop multinational military medical capabilities and the Multinational Medical Coordination Centre (MMCC). Other matters addressed was establishment of the EU Medical Command under the European Union Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO) initiative.

On January 22 the French contingent joining the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania was formally welcomed at a ceremony at the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment, Rukla. Nearly 300 French soldiers joined other eFP forces led by Germany and will together enforce the efforts of the Alliance to enhance security in the region.

On January 22 the French contingent beginning their service with the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group will be introduced at a ceremony at the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla. The ceremony will be attended by Commander of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Mechanised Infantry Brigade Iron Wolf Colonel Mindaugas Steponavičius, Commander NATO eFP Lithuania Lieutenant Colonel Thorsten Gensler, Commander of the French contingent Lieutenant Colonel Martin Wencesl, representatives of the Embassy of France in Lithuania.

The National Cyber Security Centre began an investigation into the break-in into the TV3.lt news website. The incident took place in the evening of January 18 and resulted in publishing of a piece of false news regarding Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis.

On January 17 Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas met with Ambassador of Montenegro to Lithuania Ljiljana Tošković, he welcomed Montenegro to NATO, the two officials discussed bilateral defence cooperation and security situation in the east of Europe and the Balkans.
