Schengen border crossing procedures tested

Exercise Saber Strike 2018 for the first time tests procedures put in place for crossing the Schengen space borders – it is both a trial and generation of new formulas not only in: Lithuania but also in neighbouring countries.   It is the first time US forces are crossing over to the Schengen area both on land and by sea, in Nemirseta, and by para jump,” Minister of National Defence  Raimundas Karoblis said.

Exercise Steadfast Cobalt 18, a command and control structure exercise, wrapped up on Thursday, May 31, 2018 in Kaunas, Lithuania with a Distinguished Visitors Day attended by about 100 visitors from the NATO Command Structure, the NATO Force Structure and participating Nations.

R. Karoblis to meet with Northern Group Defence Ministers in the Hague

On June 6 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will travel to the Hague to take part in the Northern Group Defence Ministers meeting. The Ministers are planned to discuss security situation in the Baltic Sea and the North Atlantic regions, potential outcome of the upcoming NATO Summit, challenges in military mobility area and solutions to them.

On June 5 Defence Attachés of the Kingdom of Norway changed over during a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania. After service since 2014 Colonel Laila Kvammen Lie was succeeded by Colonel Hakon Magnus Loken.

On May 3 Exercise Saber Strike 2018 was opened with an official ceremony near the Defence Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in Vilnius. The ceremony opening the international exercise running concurrently with national Exercise Thunder Storm 2018 was attended by Vice Minister of National Defence Giedrimas Jeglinskas, Deputy Commanding General of the US rotational forces in Europe Brigadier General Richard Coffman, Chief of the Defence Staff Major General Vitalijus Vaikšnoras.

On June 5 new Defence Attaché of the Kingdom of Norway, Colonel Hakon Magnus Loken will be accredited to Lithuania at a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. At the same ceremony former Defence Attaché Colonel Laila Kvammen Lie will be farewelled after having served since 2014.

On May 28- June 3 NATO fighter jets conducting the Air Policing Mission over the Baltic states were scrambled eight times to identify and intercept Russian Federation aircraft flying in the international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

“Exercise BALTOPS 2018 underway in the Baltic Sea not only demonstrates allied readiness to defend our region but also offers an opportunity to hone interoperability of Alliance’s forces,” minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said in June 4. He, President of the Republic of Lithuania HE Dalia Grybauskaitė, and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas observed marines conduct a landing operation from ORP Krakow and USS OAK Hill. The dignitaries observed the dynamic display from aboard the exercise flagship USS Mount Whitney.

International observers from Belarus, Finland and Sweden to observe Exercise Thunder Storm 2018

Adhering to principles of transparency and openness, Lithuania invited international observers from four neighbouring countries to attend the largest national exercise in Lithuania’s history, Thunder Storm 2018, that began today. The invitation was sent to representatives of Belarus, Finland, Sweden, and Russia in late April via the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe. Representatives of Russia formally confirmed they will not arrive to observe the exercise, the reason is not clarified.

On June 1 the third rotation of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Force Protection Unit was formally deployed to the Multinational Integrated Stabilization Mission, MINUSMA, in Mali at a ceremony in the Cathedral Square in Alytus.
