NATO eFP Battalion Battle Group change of command ceremony took place in Rukla

As of February 5 the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania will be under the command of a German officer, Lieutenant Colonel Wolf Rüdiger Otto. He took over as commander of the high-readiness multinational unit from Lieutenant Colonel Thorsten Gensler who had served in the position for six months. The transfer of command ceremony was held together with celebration of the first anniversary of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania at the Lithuanian Great Hetman Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment of the Lithuanian Armed Forces in Rukla.

On 5 February, an official ceremony will be held at the Jonušas Radvila Training Regiment in Rukla to mark the 1st anniversary of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group presence in Lithuania. To mark the occasion, troops from Germany, the Netherlands, Norway, Croatia and France as part of the eFP Battle Group currently deployed in Rukla and Lithuanian platoon will line up on the parade area. The soldiers will be congratulated by high-ranking officials of Lithuania and NATO, defence ministers and chiefs of defence Lithuania and NATO eFP Lithuania contributing nations, ambassadors and defence attachés of foreign countries.

On January 29-30 a delegation of the Ministry of Defence of Armenia conducted a visit to the Ministry of National Defence of Lithuania. The guest delegation headed by Director of the Defence Policy Department of the Ministry of Defence of Armenia  Levon Ayvazyan took part in bilateral security and defence consultations, exchanged information on the security situation in the Baltic Sea region and South Caucasus, defence policy of both countries, fight against information threats, and bilateral cooperation.

On January 30 Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas discussed the importance of officer training based on Western standards, Ukraine’s military training programmes, and reform underway, at a meeting with Lieutenant General Anatolyi Syrotenko, Commandant of the National Defence University of Ukraine, and his deputies. “I am happy about the successful cooperation between military raining institutions of Lithuania and Ukraine – apprenticeship plans, seminars, staff officer course’s study visit in Ukraine. We are ready to share our experience,” V. Umbrasas said at the meeting and stressed that international advisors identified the Ukrainian military training and education system reform as one of key priority areas.

Friday, February 5, Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis will observe final exercise of the Lithuanian soldiers deploying to the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) at General S.Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė. “The deploying soldiers assume great responsibility and completion of the entrusted tasks together with German colleagues requires great professionalism and resolve. Our soldiers have that and they will contribute to security and stability in Mali while conducting the operation,” Minister R. Karoblis says.

1,500-meter machine-gun firing range with maintenance buildings at Gaižiūnai Training Area, munitions storage grounds and access roads, aircraft target area, multifunctional firing range at General S.Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė; all of the mentioned examples are just a part of expansion and upgrade ongoing in the Lithuanian Armed Forces infrastructure and training areas.

On December 25 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with Chair of the Committee on Foreign Affairs, European Parliament, David McAllister on a visit in Lithuania. The officials addressed current European Security and Defence matters, exchanged views on the EU Permanent Structured Cooperation (PESCO). EU and NATO cooperation, using European Union Funds for security and defence needs.
