Minister of Defence and Chief of Defence of the Netherlands to visit Lithuania, meet with Dutch soldiers serving in the NATO battalion in Lithuania

On December 6 Minister of Defence Ank Bijleveld-Schouten and Chief of Defence Admiral Rob Bauer of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and a delegation will come for a visit to Lithuania. The guests will meet with Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis, leadership of the MoD and the Lithuanian Armed Forces, the Lithuanian and the Dutch Defence Ministers will hold a bilateral meeting. Later the guest Minister and the Chief of Defence will visit the General Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė (Švenčionys distr.) to meet with soldiers of the Netherlands serving as part of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group and currently training in Exercise Winter Wolf.

On December 4 Vice Minister of National Defence Giedrimas Jeglinskas took part in the European Defence Industry Summit in Brussels. Participants of the event exchange views and insights on the strategic partnership between the European Union and NATO in mobilising resources for the development of European defence research and technology, discussed multilateral cooperation, investment into technology and innovation and enhancement of the European Single Market.

On November 27-December 3 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled once to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On December 1-2 soldiers and equipment of the Croatian Defence Forces deployed in Lithuania as part of the German-led NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group.

 

“We are grateful and appreciate the contribution of the countries forming the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania. It is a demonstration of Alliance solidarity and unity, and we welcome Croatia’s decision to join the measures of strengthening NATO deterrence and collective defence in the Baltic region,” the Lithuanian Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis says.

On November 29 the fourth Autonomous Vessel Protection Detachment (AVPD-4) comprised of 14 Lithuanian soldiers is deployed to the European Union multinational Operation ATALANTA. The Lithuanian rotation will serve in the operation off the Somali coast countering piracy  and armed robbery in the Indian Ocean efforts until early March of  2018.

On November 29 the Government of the Republic of Lithuania adopted a resolution to hand over to the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine on a nonreimbursable basis its assets by proprietary rights used by the Lithuanian Armed Forces by entrustment rights. On the basis of the resolution, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence will be given weapons and ammunition that the Lithuanian Armed Forces used before becoming a member of NATO and do not coincide with the calibres used in NATO.

On November 30 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis is departing for the United States of America to attend the Reagan National Defense Forum (RNDF). The Minister and U.S. security and defence officials will discuss the most significant challenges of the present day of the global security and U.S. national security agenda. The Forum is planned to cover the topics of the U.S. defence priorities, the most important challenges to the U.S. security agenda, development of the U.S. defence industry, and plans of the present administration to strengthen the U.S. Armed Forces, and other issues.

On November 27-28 Chief of the Joint Staff of the Lithuanian Armed Forces Major General Vitalijus Vaikšnoras is conducting a visit in Ukraine to attend meetings of the Multinational Joint Commission on Defense Reform and Security Cooperation with Ukraine (MJC), a body responsible for coordination of international support to Ukraine’s military reform. The Multinational Joint Commission comprises representatives of Ukraine, U.S., UK, Canada, Poland, and Lithuania, and 13 subcommittees.  Lithuania takes part in the work of the Subcommittees on the Land Force, Special Operations Forces, and Military Police, and head the Subcommittee on the NCO Reform.

On November 20-26 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states carried out four alert scrambles in order to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

“Belgium’s joining the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion in Lithuania is probably the most pronounced defence cooperation event of Lithuania and Belgium from historical perspective. It demonstrates Belgium’s understanding of the threats and security challenges in our region,” Minister Raimundas Karoblis said at a meeting with Minister of Defence of the Kingdom of Belgium Steven Vandeput in Vilnius on November 24.
