Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas thanked former Commander of the U.S. Army Europe, Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, currently visiting Lithuania, for the work he had doen to improve the security of our country and the region.

“Lithuania highly values U.S. assistance in improving our military infrastructure and strengthening national defence capabilities. It helped us speed up the upgrade of our military infrastructure and increase national resilience to potential threats,” Minister R. Karoblis said thanking B. Hodges.

Lt Gen B. Hodges finished his service in December and is joining the Center for European Policy Analysis (CEPA) as of January 2018.

In the capacity of the Commander of the U.S. Army Europe, Lt B. Hodges was a strong supporter of the security interest of Lithuania and the entire region. When Lt Gen B. Hodges assumed the command as the U.S. Commander Europe in November 2014 Lithuania received a particularly strong U.S. support for strengthened deterrence measures and increasing resilience to potential threats. B. Hodges’s support allowed bringing rotational U.S. companies to Lithuania, closer cooperation in defence planning and joint preparation for countering potential threats. The military cooperation between Lithuania and the U.S. has never been so close and mutually beneficial.

Last time the U.S. General visited Lithuania last autumn to observe the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion and the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ brigade train in Exercise Iron Wolf II.

Former U.S. Army Europe Commander is in Lithuania to attend the Snow Meeting, an informal Lithuanian and foreign security policy expert-level meeting arranged by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on January 11-12 to address major challenges facing the transatlantic community and possible solutions.
