Ministers signed an agreement to strengthen cooperation of the Baltic states’ special forces

Joint Communique

 

On November 24 Minister of National Defence of Lithuania Raimundas Karoblis, Minister of Defence of Latvia Raimonds Bergmanis, and Minister of Defence of Estonia Jüri Luik discussed topical matters in NATO and EU context, addressed strengthening of the Baltic states’ special forces cooperation, and maritime surveillance, at a meeting in Vilnius.

 

“Cooperation among the Special Operations Forces is vital for the Baltic region. This service would be the first one to respond to developing crises, therefore Baltic Special Operations Forces have to cooperate closely because that is hoe security of all the Baltic states is strengthened,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis said.

 

Lithuania chaired the Baltic Security and Defence Cooperation. After the Ministers’ meeting the duties were transferred to Estonia.

 

On November 24 Baltic Ministers of Defence signed a joint communique which reflects the Baltic states’ priorities in strengthening regional security.

 

Ministers of Defence of Latvia and Estonia also attended celebration of the centenary of the re-established Lithuanian Armed Forces.

 

Cooperation with the other Baltic states is one of the main Lithuania’s international cooperation priorities. Baltic Defence Ministers and Chiefs of Defence are meeting biannually to discuss political aspects of regional security, jointly develop practical cooperation projects, such as the Baltic Defence College, assignment of a joint Baltic unit to NATO forces, Baltic Air Surveillance and Control System, Baltic Naval Squadron. Further priorities of the Baltic Defence Cooperation are proposed at such meetings. Baltic Defence Policy Directors, chiefs of joint staffs, Commanders of air, land, naval, special forces, and experts of various levels are meeting on a regular basis as well.
