Development of the Lithuanian military training areas and territories is continued

On January 9 the Government of Lithuania approved general plan for a part of Švenčionys district municipality and development of Lithuania’s military training areas and territories is continued. Area of Gen Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė is planned to be expanded from 2220.1 ha to 4985.15 ha and the training territory will be expanded from 6265.89 ha to 12528.70 ha.

Military areas and training territories are expanded to provide better training conditions for both, Lithuanian soldiers and military personnel of NATO allies deployed in Lithuania. New training ranges are set up in order to improve the Lithuanian Armed Forces’ combat training infrastructure – firing ranges are adjusted to the newly procured weapons systems and equipment. Provision for the increasing needs of storage and Host Nation Support are also ensured.

When the p[project of developing the Gen S.Žukauskas Training Area is completed, it will be the only one Lithuania capable of accommodating manoeuvres and live fire with IFVs and tanks and air support of a battle group of up to a battalion size. Expanded size of the training area and additional infrastructure will also allow training artillery units and completing other tasks.

No additional funds will be necessary to implement the present resolution of the Government.

Development of Lithuania’s military areas began in 2014 on the basis of the assessment of Lithuanian and allied troops’ training needs. Aside from the main military areas in Gaižiūnai and Pabradė, development plans are also drafted for military areas of General Kazys Veverskis (Kazlų Rūda), Rokai (Kaunas), Kairiai (Klaipėda), Pagudonė (Telšių distr.).

Lithuania has been taking part in the NSIP since joining NATO in 2004, in the period from 2004 to 2017 roughly 30 NSIP projects were implemented the total sum of investment (including Lithuania’s part) being over EUR 53 million.

The development and infrastructure enhancement projects are financed from the Lithuanian MoD budget, US European Reassurance Initiative, and the NATO Security Investment Programme in equal parts. Countries deploying to the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania area also contributing financially.

Main work is currently underway in two objects of public importance – in Gen S. Žukausas Training Area in Pabradė and the Gaižiūnai Training Area in the vicinity of Rukla. It is expected to be finished by 2022 with fully ready military training areas complying with NATO military training standards as a result.
