On May 16 new Defence Attaché of Slovakia Colonel Jaroslav Balaž was accredited to Lithuania at a ceremony at the Ministry of National Defence. He was congratulated upon the new posting by Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas.

“Lithuania and Slovakia are active participants in the efforts to enhance stability and security in Europe and beyond as NATO allies and regional partners, we have the same values and interests uniting us. Today when the security situation in Europe has become hard to predict, we have to communicate even more, therefore the appointment of a Slovak defence attaché is crucial for closer cooperation of our countries in defence area,” the Defence Vice Minister said at the ceremony.

The newly appointed Defence Attaché Col J. Balaž underscored it was an honour for him to contribute to the strengthening of bilateral cooperation and to represent the Ministry of Defence of Slovakia and his country.

The Slovak Defence Attaché was also congratulated by representatives of the Ministry of National Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

The Defence Attaché of Slovakia to Lithuania will be based in Warsaw, Poland.

Slovakia’s officer serves with the NATO Force Integration Unit in Vilnius. Lithuanian and Slovak soldiers train in joint military exercises, for instance, roughly 30 Lithuanian Air Force Air Defence Battalion officers took part in Exercise Tobruq Legacy 2016 in Slovakia last fall.

Slovakia also contributes to the security of the Baltic states by deploying rotational forces to the region together with the other Visegrad countries.
