Data on interceptions of aircraft completed near the Baltic States' borders October 7 – 13, 2019

On October 7 – 13 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states carried out four alert scrambles to identify and escort aircraft in the international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

 

On October 9 NATO air policing fighter aircraft intercepted one SU-24 of the Russian Federation flying from and to Kaliningrad with its onboard transponder off, without the flight, without maintaining the communication with the regional air traffic control centre.

 

On October 9 NATO fighter aircraft intercepted two SU-24 aircraft of the Russian Federation flying from and to Kaliningrad, neither had their onboard transponders on, neither had pre-filed flight plans, and neither maintained radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.

 

On October 11 fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled to intercept what was estimated to be two SU-27 aircraft of the Russian Federation flying from Kaliningrad into the international airspace over the Baltic Sea. The attempt to identify the aircraft failed. Neither of the aircraft had their onboard transponders on, neither had the flight plan, and neither kept the radio communication. Both estimated SU-27s returned to Kaliningrad.

 

On October 13 NATO fighter aircraft intercepted on AN-12 of the Russian Federation flying from Kaliningrad to mainland Russia without using its onboard transponder, according to a pre-filed flight plan, maintaining radio communication with the regional air traffic control centre.
