Crisis management and coordination discussed with representatives of the UK at a meeting at the Ministry of National Defence
Vice Minister of National Defence Giedrimas Jeglinskas met with representatives of the Cabinet Office of the UK Dr Stuart Wainwright and Dr Owen Jackson responsible for national and international resilience.
The guests were interested in crisis management system in Lithuania, information and cyber security, and lessons learned after the information provocations against the NATO battalion troops.
The United Kingdom will post an experienced representative responsible for crisis management in Riga to cooperate with all three Baltic states as of the autumn of 2017. The United Kingdom not only wants to share its long and multifaceted experience in crisis management but also learn about the aspects of crisis management in the Baltics and familiarise with incidental issues. The British experience in the area is invaluable to Lithuania and other Baltic states as the traditions of British crisis response and crisis management policy coordination institutions go back over 100 years.
Defence cooperation between Lithuania and the United Kingdom
British-Lithuanian defence cooperation significantly intensified over the several past years.
The UK deployed several rotations of the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states. In the first semester of 2016 Lithuanian troops were on standby for the UK-led European Union Battle Group together with Irish, Latvian, Finnish and Swedish soldiers.
A company of Algirdas Battalion has been assigned to the UK-led Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) since early 2017.
Lithuania also contributes to the currently developed UK-led Joint Expeditionary Force (JEF). The high readiness rapid response force will be capable of conducting wide spectrum of operations, from humanitarian aid to combat actions, it will reach Full Operational Capability in 2018. Lithuania contributes a company-sized unit and an officer posted to the operational headquarters in Northwood since March.
A British officer also serves with the NATO Force Integration Unit in Vilnius.
The United Kingdom is the framework nation for the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battlegroup deployed in Estonia since spring to strengthen security in the region.
