Bilateral defence cooperation plan between Lithuania and Moldova signed in Kishinev

On March 6 bilateral military-political talks on security challenges, courses of Lithuania’s and Moldova’s ongoing defence reform, and directions of bilateral cooperation were held in Kishinev Lithuanian-Moldovan.

 

At the meeting, Head of the Department of International Relations and Operations Karolis Aleksa and acting Head of the International Cooperation Directorate Lt Col Tatjana Ionel signed Bilateral Cooperation Plan 2018. The document covers bilateral cooperation in information sharing on cyber defence, military psychology, conscription, and NCO reform, in holding high-level visits, studies of Moldova’s military representatives at the Military Academy of Lithuania, Lithuanian Armed Forces School, medical courses, and the Baltic Defence College in Tartu.

 

Moldova, along with Georgia and Ukraine, is one of the most important states receiving support of the Lithuanian Ministry of Defence and the Lithuanian Armed Forces to their defence reforms and armed forces transformations. The bilateral defence cooperation has been ongoing since 2004, on the basis of annually endorsed bilateral plans. Lithuania provides consultations to Moldova in the areas of defence reform, public relations and strategic communication, and democratic control of armed forces. Moldovan officers are invited to observe exercises, Lithuanian soldiers are invited to train in exercises in Moldova.

 

In April 2006 Lithuania assigned a military representatives to Moldova, he is based in Kiev. In 2009–2010, when Lithuania’s Embassy served as a NATO Contact Point Embassy, Lithuania’s Defence Attaché in Moldova was based in Kishinev. Since 2011 Lithuania Defence Attaché in Moldova has been based in Kiev. Moldova does not a have a military representative assigned to Lithuania.
