On January  14–20 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled twice to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Amsterdam, January 17-18 – Progress and future developments of Lithuanian-led EU Cyber Rapid Response Teams (CRRT) and Mutual Assistance in Cyber Security project to be discussed at the annual conference in Amsterdam (the Netherlands).

 

“We have achieved significant progress on the path of developing the EU cyber response force along with other participating countries and strategic partners of the project over the past year. Actions taken prove that we can develop and combine forces in practice to fight threats in cyberspace and to strengthen collective defence in this realm,” Lithuanian Deputy Defence Minister Edvinas Kerza says ahead of the conference.

On January 16 Vice Minister of National Defence Vytautas Umbrasas met with Lieutenant General Erhard Bühler (German Army), the Designated Commander Joint Force Command Brunssum (the Netherlands), conducting a three-day visit in Lithuania. Vice Minister and the guest discussed regional security, arsing threats, efforts to strengthen Lithuania’s defence, NAT’s deterrence and defence measures.

On January 14 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with Ambassador of the Czech Republic in Lithuania  Vít Korselt. At the meeting prospects of bilateral military cooperation and NATO and the EU defence initiatives were discussed and views on the security situation in the region and the whole of Europe were exchanged.

Lithuanian arms control inspector is visiting Russia’s artillery brigade

On January 15 a Lithuanian arms control inspector is visiting the 9th Artillery Brigade of the Russian Federation based in Luga in composition of an Estonian-led arms control inspectors group. The group is conducting a verification visit in accordance with the Vienna Document 2011 of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), it includes members from Estonia, Lithuania and France.

On January 21 the Ministry of National Defence is holding the second round of in-depth public presentation and discussion concerning procurements documents related to the Public-Private Partnership projects planned by the Ministry of National Defence. As a result of the said projects, three new military facilities are planned to be built over the several coming years in Šiauliai town, and regions of Šilalė and Vilnius.

Development of the Lithuanian military training areas and territories is continued

On January 9 the Government of Lithuania approved general plan for a part of Švenčionys district municipality and development of Lithuania’s military training areas and territories is continued. Area of Gen Silvestras Žukauskas Training Area in Pabradė is planned to be expanded from 2220.1 ha to 4985.15 ha and the training territory will be expanded from 6265.89 ha to 12528.70 ha.

Support to NATO by Lithuanian people – at its highest of five years

86% of the population are in favor of Lithuania’s NATO membership which is the highest percentage in the past five years. A similar number of respondents (83%) approve of NATO allies’ presence on the territory of Lithuania. The data was gathered through a public opinion poll carried out by request of the Ministry of National Defence in December 2018.
