Czech soldiers are joining the NATO enhanced Forward Presence in Lithuania

Soldiers of the Czech Republic will join the NATO enhanced Forward Presence (NATO eFP) deployed in Lithuania for deterrence and defence as of July 17. Roughly 250 Czech troops will be serving with the NATO eFP stationed in Rukla.

“Deployment of Czech forces to Lithuania demonstrates the country’s firm support and NATO solidarity in ensuring security of Lithuania and the Baltic Region. The active allies’ participation in the NATO eFP in the Baltic states and Poland sends a clear signal that the Alliance is strong, united, and ready to respond to any threat,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis says.

On July 9 – 15 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled six times to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On July 11-12 NATO Heads of State and Government met in Brussels to discuss the Alliance’s readiness to respond to security threats and challenges , strengthening deterrence and collective defence and projecting stability, and responding to challenges from the South. NATO leaders also discussed the security situation and the NATO mission in Afghanistan, and relations with Georgia and Ukraine.

On July 11 a farewell ceremony was held at the Ministry of National Defence for Defence Attaché of Hungary Lt Col Tamás Melke after his tour of duty. He was in the position from 2014 based in Warsaw, Poland.

"We have to make sure that all the security measures NATO is currently implementing in the Baltic region are properly integrated into the new NATO Command Structure,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis has said today, July 11, at the NATO Summit in Brussels where great attention is paid to the Baltic region just like in the previous Summits in Wales and Warsaw.

“It will not be possible to normalise our relations with Russia as long as its aggression against Ukraine and malicious activities against Western countries continue,” Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis stated in Brussels on Tuesday, ahead of the NATO Summit, at a high-level discussion on the way forward in NATO-Russian relations.
