On September 10- 16 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled once to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

On September 14 Germany’s Chancellor Angela Merkel, accompanied by President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė, visited soldiers of Germany serving in Rukla and in charge of the NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battalion Battle Group in Lithuania. Head of the Federal Government was also accompanied by Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis and Chief of Defence of Lithuania Lieutenant General Jonas Vytautas Žukas.

“Signature of the agreement is an important piece of evidence of political consensus concerning continued strengthening and modernisation of armed forces,” Minister of National Defence said on September 1 when the agreement “On Lithuanian Defence Policy Guidelines” was signed by political parties represented at the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania.

On September 3 – 9 NATO fighter aircraft conducting the NATO Air Policing Mission in the Baltic states were scrambled four times to identify and escort military aircraft of the Russian Federation in international airspace over the Baltic Sea.

Installing of the air firing range completed in Kazlų Rūda training area, exercises are planned for this autumn

Installing of the air-to-ground firing range complying with NATO standards has been completed at Brigadier General K. Veverskis Training Area in Kazlų Rūda. Works also included renovation of roads, installing of firefighting system. The first exercise is planned for this autumn already.

On September 7 Minister of National Defence Raimundas Karoblis met with Director General of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly David Hobbs conducting a forma visit in Lithuania. The officials discussed the expanding military capability of the Russian Federation, especially near the eastern borders of the Alliance, and the steadily growing militarisation of Kaliningrad Oblast, the increasing hybrid threats in cyber and information space, and potential measures of deterrence.

The Ministry of National Defence opens the traditional, already 14th Tadas Dambrauskas Photography Contest “Lithuanian Armed Forces in Photography 2018”, in memory of combat photographer and  cameraman Tadas Dambrauskas.   

All professional and amateur photographers who had the chance to take photographs of the Lithuanian Armed Forces and NATO soldiers in Lithuania are invited to look through the pictures taken this year and in the end of last year, choose the best ones, and submit them for the contest. The pictures have to reflect military life: completion of combat tasks, soldiers during exercises and feasts, community engagement events, facing daily challenges and experiences, etc.

On September 6 Ambassador of Sweden in Lithuania HE Maria Christina Lundqvist and Defence Attaché of Sweden Örjan Ström thanked crews of Lithuanian Air Force Mi-8 helicopter for helping distinguish fires in Sweden and presented a letter of commendation from Supreme Commander of Sweden General Micael Bydén.
